In this programme, Youth Capital called the participants Community Influencers because they were already making a small difference in their communities. Youth Capital wanted to amplify their impact by up-skilling them in various ways. One of the key skills we wanted to develop in these young people was storytelling.
I used case studies from South Africa’s past, specifically Sam Nzima’s photograph of the 1976 Soweto Youth Uprising, to help illustrate the power of visual storytelling to support social campaigns. I also developed skills like smartphone photography & videography to help them create content to support their local campaigns.
